Key Features

Key Features

Database Connection Management

Connection Setup Video

DbVisualizer is based on the JDBC toolkit and there are JDBC drivers for almost every database that is available on the market. DbVisualizer supports connecting to local, remote (with option for SSH) and embedded (Java based) databases. Connection management is flexible, with options to set up a connection via the step-by-step Connection Wizard or by manually defining the connection data.

  • Dynamic JDBC driver management (no CLASSPATH editing)
  • SSH support with known_hosts and private key support
  • Step-by-step connection setup with a wizard
  • Connection Keep-Alive
  • Optionally use a single physical connection for all operations
  • Organize database connections in folders
  • Set individual tab background color and borders for each connection
  • Connect a single or multiple connections with a single click

By default, separate physical connections are used to provide transaction isolation and to ensure reliable parallel execution. When needed, e.g. when working with an embedded database, a single physical connection can be used for everything instead.

Database Object Management

Database Explorer Video

Database Object Management is all about browsing the database objects and administering objects such as tables, procedures, functions, triggers, packages, modules, etc.

DBVisualizer - Database management tools
  • The databases tab is one of the features in DbVisualizer that is used the most. Use it to navigate the objects in the database, run actions and open objects for more details

  • Table objects are the most central objects in any RDBMS. DbVisualizer includes support to visually create, alter, drop and rename tables, with even more database-specific actions added for the supported databases

  • DbVisualizer include support for PL (procedural language) objects such as procedures, functions, packages and triggers. Objects of this type can be created, edited, compiled (when appropriate) and executed

  • The Export Schema/Database feature is used to export the DDL for objects such as tables, views, procedures, functions, triggers, packages and package bodies

  • The references graph is a great feature as it automatically renders all primary/foreign key mappings (also called referential integrity constraints) in a graph style

SQL Tools

SQL Commander Video

The SQL Tools in DbVisualizer is centered around the SQL Commander, with its SQL Editor and Query Builder. Additional features are the Scripts, SQL History, Explain Plan and support to display result sets as stunning charts.

  • The SQL Commander supports multiple editors and result sets, bookmark feature, formatting, script execution and extensive customization. Result sets can be edited, viewed in text or chart format

  • The grid component is a very central component in DbVisualizer and it provides a lot of convenient context-dependent features

  • The Query Builder provides an easy way to develop database queries. The query builder uses a point-and-click interface and does not require in-depth knowledge about the SQL syntax

  • Explain Plan is a way to analyze how a query will be processed by the database, for instance whether an index can be used or if a full table scan is required

  • DBVisualizer - Database management tools
  • The SQL history feature displays information about scripts you have executed in the SQL Commander. Status information, execution time, affected number of rows and more information is displayed for each entry

  • The bookmark feature is used to organize frequently used SQL statements in a folder structure

  • Any result set produced by a query in the SQL Commander can be visualized in a chart. Chart is a popular presentation format in the Monitor feature
